post show drunkin donuts with tommy and lewscious
the crowd at the big easy wasnt so big or easy for that matter. it seemed like they were pretty tough to break through to but i guess its normal for the crowds there to just “listen” and not get all into it. at least that is what someone there told me. so with that in mind you could safely say it was like a los angeles crowd. i think there were under 100 people there but what do you expect….well, i expected more but we sold a fair number of cds considering the attendence. we always seem to sell a bunch of cds after we play these days which is very encouraging because that means we are making fans just on virtue of our live show. i dont think we had our best show and i credit that to the fact they dont allow alcohol on stage. how random is that. maine and i think iowa are the only states that dont allow you to bring drinks on stage. what year is it? i think prohibition started in maine…maybe they’re still holding on to the past. before the show we all ended up meeting at an ice cream shop where the picture above was taken. another rated g family moment.
portland me was a nice change of pace from the last two major cites we were in. it was really, well, quaint…and peaceful. as far as the food situation went my philosophy was “when in rome…: and i had lobster for lunch and lobster for dinner. it was pretty tasty – i had dinner at a place called the porthole with the band. my friend michael who was at the boston show also came to the maine show. it was cool seeing him again. so dinner was cool because you eat right on a pier or dock…basically right on the water.
i was bummed i had to leave early to go play because a classic rock cover band had just started to play. they blew a fuse in the middle of their first song and all their amps died which was a hilarious and classic spinal tap moment if you ask me. after the show we unfortunately had to return to the shitty motel we were staying at. our hotel smelled like piss and mold. maybe that’s why there was a mole hanging out in front of our door. i guess that would explain the room being so moldy.
The City: portland, maine is a hell of a lot different than portland, oregon but still amazing in it’s own way. the one thing i hated about the town was our dump of a motel. god, it was the worst ever. don’t ever stay at the budget inn if you decide to go to portland maine. it was the smelliest shithole or should i say pisshole since that’s exactly what my room smelled like, i’ve ever been forced to stay in. just disgusting. on a lighter note, the town is superrr picturesque, well equipped with cobblestone streets and a nice breeze. this was the first time i can say i experienced a meal that made my eyes roll back in pleasure. rob, mark, carter and i ate at an irish pub or something and i had the pleasure of having baked scallops and other tasty delights wrapped in a tortilla. bomb. so fresh to def, it’s making me type out in ebonics… almost. that is how good it was. you what the best part of my meal was? sweet potato fries. mhm, that’s right child. sweet potato fries dipped in cajun mayonnaise or something. heaven. besides having mark lewis feed me the best lobster i’ve ever had, which is a sexy moment in itself, this was probably my big portland highlight. wait wait, that and the home made ice cream cone fran and i shared. that was kind of sexy too. we are such a sexy band. eating well = sexy. get into it, people.
The Venue: sadly enough, it didn’t live up to it’s name.
The Show: i gave this show a five out of ten. seriously, people, i’m hard on myself and on this band. we sold like twenty cd’s i think but i don’t believe we gave an outstanding performance. the one exception to that rule is mark lewis. he played immaculately tonight. i love my lewscious.
What Were You Thinking While Playing: “ugh.” “why am i sucking so bad right now?” “i knew i shouldn’t have gotten so full before a performance.” “mmm… lobster.”
Interesting Things After The Show: i started and finished a beautiful book by steven chbosky and got some awesome pictures and video footage of the cutest blind mole that was hanging outside of my smelly room. god, i am so boring. you love it.
Carter’s Conscience Portland Maine– After driving around town till 6:30 am trying to get a hotel, we slept until 3 and went to the gig. I went on a little jog in the morning, ran into the forest, saw a squirrel, got my head together. The gig was a small place, probably the smallest we will play the whole tour, a bit of a logistical nightmare getting everything on stage. Really really hot and humid out. . . Portand is a really rootsy old city. its a fishing town. The coolest person I met was the lady working in 7-11 at 6 am. She called around and tried to find us hotels, all the while talking about her X-husbands, one of which is a shrimp boat captain. you just don’t meet many ex-wives of shrimp boat captains back home. . . I didn’t feel like I had my best show in Maine, I can’t remember why, just a feeling. Maybe just a bit tired. Touring in a Suburban will run you down, trust me

The Big Easy is one of the worst bars to play in Portland. Many people who actually like and can appreciate music wont even set foot in there. Its usually full of preppy college types stumbling in from the oldport after a little bevy imbibing.
If you ever head back there check out The Space, Genos, or by that time The Skinny should be up and running again…All great venues run by really cool people.
anony – you’re welcome. it’s the least we can do for everyone that makes this possible for us
