Indian Ocean
i’m not lying folks. here’s my first blog from the heart of darkness….that being the studio in the dark dank corners of beautiful skid row in crappy downtown los angeles. at least our studio looks like a little island oasis thanks to the fake palm tree in the corner and funky ocean sunset wallpaper. this picture was taken at 3:38 this morning. it’s of rob eningeering mariqueen while she sings one of her parts in our next epic song “indian ocean”. it’s a dreamer man. check out the first line – I’ve been up all night wishing I was somewhere else haha it actually has nothing to do with being down here in the studio but in a way it’s a perfect description about being down here sometimes.

Fran – I know! I just disappeared! Between my dad and me getting sick and all, I wasn’t feeling social.poo. As for congas and bongos, I’m no tito puente (rest in peace) but I’m alright.
But that kind of sound would make a song delicious!
Zontobi – wtf? where have you been? we actually want someone to congas on a song. are you good?
Sir Brian – i like the whole webcam idea too but maybe im just perverted. dude, great idea on the video for the space, i will do the tour from the street up to give people a good idea of the space. it will be shitty quality though cos of my camera. how’s the record?
Kampy – great post man, hahah it is like a college dorm but not even as nice. fyi the kitchen stove doesnt work – all for show. wish it did though. and there is no heat. trust me that area really gets to you after a while and i think in many ways is slowing our creative process down. it fucking sucks in downtown la and this city should be embarrassed by it. i mean if any one of our moms went down there they would probably start to cry.

As someone who has actually seen the space in question, I can tell you all that the pic certainly does not do it justice. Much like the campus of USC, the WIG rehearsal space is like an island oasis surrounded by an ocean of bleak despair. F10 warned me to look out for the homeless folk outside the building (a nondescript concrete warehouse) but I still wasn’t ready for the sight of hundreds of homeless people camped out on the surrounding sidewalks. Tents and cardboard boxes lined up one after the other all the way around the block made for a depressing reminder of just how many people have to live on the streets. I stepped over a man sleeping just outside the door and made my way up the dimly-lit concrete stairway, wondering how these guys can create such beautiful music in this environment.
But when Fran opened the door to their studio, it was like stepping into a different world. It’s a pretty big space, but it feels downright cozy. It’s amazing what a few rugs, tapestries, couches, candles, posters, christmas lights, plants, etc can accomplish. There’s even a “kitchen” area with huge windows that give a big view of the downtown LA skyline.
And you guys wouldn’t want the flash turned on anyway, because that wouldn’t show the place as it actually looks– which is kinda dimly-lit and relaxing. A bright flash wouldn’t relate the ambience of the space very well. I thought it was cool. kinda reminded me of my room in college, only bigger.
i love the idea of a studio webcam, though i’m a little scared of what that might have revealed. 🙂
since you can upload video now, you should do a mini-studio tour cuz it looks like that place rules.

Crap! I haven’t posted in a while! I like the pic. It’s cool to see where the magic happens.
I’d suck as a band member/ Besides the fact I can only play congas, I’d never be able to stay up that “early”.
