On A Rainy Day In LA

i cancelled my cable tv subscription today

i got a haircut

i found someone’s pager on the side walk

i had a cappuccino

i bought and ingested a form of liquid collagen

i found the picture i just posted when i was cleaning out my email – kevin reid took it one night he stopped by practice

i watched videos of that tsunami on the web

i had an egg salad sandwich (it sucked) i had sweet and sour chicken (it sucked too)

i quit smoking (again)

i talked to chris carter about the pro and cons of waxing or shaving your balls

i took tony for a walk at 3AM and saw this creepy guy just sitting alone in his car on my block

i realized i have to do laundry tomorrow

i just popped open a miller high life and i’m waiting to get sleepy — F.TEN 3:37AM

    hey bitch:

waxing or shaving? are you serious? i had NO idea. (uhm, might i suggest “nair”?)

also to the dude that called you a sell out, up there in self-righteous seattle: if you wanna pay all his bills and make sure he’s well fed and taken care of, please feel free, otherwise, go screw.

thanks a lot for replying. honestly I’m a really big fan and didn’t mean any disrespect on the ‘selling out’ comment. it was not so much a cut on you guys but the fact that that, for a lot of great bands/artists, it sucks that selling your music to a big corporation is the only way to get by… i totally hear you only paying back debts and everything, being an artist is not really conducive to survival, and when it comes down to it you can only even start worrying about ‘selling out’ IF YOU HAVE THE RESOURCES ALREADY IN THE FIRST PLACE! i guess part of it was i really wanted to cover that song (and maybe use it for soundtrack in this movie i was working on- not without permission of course– as sort of a place holder until i can get all the equipment i need to write and record the whole soundtrack myself so i dont have to worry about any permissions!) and i didnt want to cover one that someone might have heard on a budweiser ad. i’m sure i’d sell whatever i could if i had the chance.

yeah i’ll show you how i play it– i think it’s ‘right’ because it makes sense and sounds like the album. you guys did it right by putting the acoustic guitar in left and right pan, full, so then their is some substance, some meat on the trippy keyboard and guitar echoes that work so well on that song.

i was thinking of maybe tabbing my version of that the guitar of that song and i could show it to you. my vocal style is actually pretty similar to robert’s too so its great stuff for me to sing and play. and there’s so many keepers on that album…

also i was thinking next time you’re up here i dont know if you have anyone filming any of the shows, i’ve been filming some shows for different local artists and then burning a dvd for them.

well anyways im hella stoked to get to talk to you, definitely give us any kind of notes from your practice sessions, new songs you’re working on, parts you’re getting stuck on… it could be like the internet version of ashlee simpson but only with a real band that writes their own songs, plays there own instruments and rules.

hey luke – thanx for the comment not to mention the compliments. we need to talk. as far as the recording goes – that’s a long conversation and i would be glad to get into that when we meet cos it’s intense. glad you made reference to being “tone-conscious” – it was very deliberate. you’ve given me some food for thought as far as new journal entries go. i think i will start describing how we are writing some of the new material in practice. it’s nice to get feedback– thanx. as far as selling out goes…. ever see the godfather when don corleone says “i made him an offer he couldn’t refuse”? well, sometimes when you’re faced with trying to scrape by living the life of a “artist” for a few years it’s tough to not turn down an occasional chance to stop borrowing money from all of your friends and family. come find me at the next show and show me how you’re playing dream.

hey francis. I’m a home recording musician myself. with all due respect to the great wax versus shave dilemna, I personally would really appreciate any trivia or stories about the songs, the songwriting process or the recording process, (what instruments used, what recording equipment– I read an interview where you guys said you used all real instruments– really like to know how you pulled this off with the layering) or how you manage to reproduce this album sound live (I live in Seattle area, just missed the Chop Suey show DAMN!!!) This is the best produced album I’ve heard since OK Computer and maybe some other of Nigel Godrich’s projects, but anyways, it’s THE soundtrack to our times– in such cases it takes a little while for the times to catch up. Kind of bummed you had to sell Dream to a beer company, but that’s how we are up in seattle, into all that ‘dont sell out’ shit… You gotta do what you got to do to get the word out though, I understand that, I just don’t think with an album this good you should HAVE to, dig? I’ve learned that song Dream (your first demo from what I understand?)and I play it for people. It’s a great song. This album is full of great songs and trancey trippy yet ‘tone-conscious’ album, a great fusion of styles… okay I could go on and on here and get into specifics of different songs because I have them all pretty well memorized, right down to all the cool trippy pan keyboard shit. keep up the good work and give us some insight on the recording of the album if you could.

Tell me about what it was like in Texas and how you came to move to Hollywood if you want… I don’t know, I’m just throwing stuff out here. I got a poster for you to sign when you get back up here.

    Thanks,
