Eternal Sunshine for Rutger Hauer

i finally got around to watching the movie “eternal sunshine for the spotless mind” tonight. why i waited so long to see this movie is anyone’s guess – it was great. the thing i liked best about it was the fact that it triggered a host of personal memories — mostly bad, but some good. i thought about a few moments in my life that i would never want to erase from my memory just for the sake of easing the pain associated with getting over a relationship. those few moments are sometimes the peak experiences of life – the moments u only dream of happening. they’re moments that you know when u r having them that they are indeed special and deserve to be savored because of their fleeting nature. these moments (good and bad) are the moments and memories which can make you’re life feel like a movie. y would you want to loose the memories that transport you back to a time and place where you can see, smell, and feel so vividly. these kinds of memories are hypnotic when u think about them. these are the moments that should never be lost. memory pain removal would basically destroy my soul. it’s this type of memory that fuels life and pushes the creation of new thoughts and new ways of coping, dealing, feeling and creating. anyway, if i could relive the 3 days i had in st barths this year i would be one pretty happy man but i actually cant even think about those moments cos it will make me extremely sad – but i want to think about those moments cos it was one of the best times of my life hmmm… conflict. bittersweet — the theme of west indian girl.

so, how does one deal with this problem of thinking or not thinking about a past lover – there is no answer – maybe the moral of the story is just that there is a time and place for all your memories (good and bad) to be experienced — anyway check out this link to Lacuna Inc i thought it was pretty funny. the movie also made me think about vanilla sky which has a great soundtrack. the original version was cool too – abre los ojos. this whole topic has now reminded me (for some random reason) of a great line at the end of bladerunner when rutger hauer says while he’s dying.

[Roy:] “I’ve seen things, you people wouldn’t believe, hmmm…. attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.I’ve watched C Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments, will be lost in time like tears in rain…”[“… time to die …”]

classic — go rent bladerunner now — 2:40 am F. TEN

Though Jon Brion did an amazing job scoring “Eternal Sunshine” (check out some of the backwards-delay recurring theme stuff at the crucial moments) I think West Indian Girl would make a perfect soundtrack for that movie. I mean, think of that scene where they’re lying on the frozen lake? Perfect for one of the best bridges I’ve heard in a really long time (now that’s songwriting, folks ‘and still you’re asking why love is across the frozen lake that always seems to break when you walk too the other side.”

That song is already one of my favorite songs of all time, I’ve already tabbed it and played it for people who are like “West Indian Girl, huh?” I’m like just watch this album is going to be a classic. (well it already is, its just waiting for everyone else to catch up.)

I’m SOOOOOOOOO bummed i missed you at chop suey– i kept seeing “tour info soon” on your website and finally gave up on it, you better get back soon. I have your album pretty much memorized, I have lots of questions about what you record with, ive done home recording, your production is PERFECT.

Okay got to get back to work. Thanks for providing the soundtrack to my existence– apart from the songs of my own im constantly reworking in my head all day at work (oops)

The academic’s idea of the three R’s (Reading, wRiting, and aRithematic) is scewed.

I think it should be four R’s. The first is the same as the aforementioned list. Reading. The one free thing in life is a library card. The gateway to seemingly infinite knowledge. What pleasure.

The second. Relaxation. This world needs to chill out. There’s so much tension these days nationally and internationally. Nothing positive can get done if it continues like this. I think the last four years can prove that point.

Third is Records. There’s nothing better than going to that hole-in-the-wall record store and finding unexpected treasures. Coming home and throwing the record on the player. It’s brings back the days of active listening as opposed to how the music industry is now. 10-second soundbytes selling millions of disks.

And fourth, which is the reason of posting this nonsense, is Reflection. The only real way of self-evaluation is through reflection. Erasing any or all bad memories would be to ignore any or all lessons life throws your way. What a waste. Show me someone who has gone through a trouble-free life and i’ll show you a fool.

Anyways, i hope this didn’t bore you. And if it did, i hope you didn’t read it all the way through. I can relate with your post yesterday about spending Thanksgiving alone. I didn’t get to fly back and spend it with friends and family. I spent the day studying and eating tunahelper and drinking orange juice. How glamerous.
